Recording on a remote Icelandic coast shaped everything about their latest album. The band explain how landscape becomes structure.
Ashen Grove's music has always felt geographic, and it turns out that's no accident. The band relocated to a coastal studio for the better part of a year, letting the rhythm of the tides and the long winter dark seep into the recordings.
That patience is audible. Tracks stretch past the seven-minute mark, refusing to rush toward their payoff. The band see this as a feature, not a risk — an invitation to slow down in a world that rarely allows it.
They're wary of being pinned down as a 'post-rock' band, preferring to think of themselves as landscape painters who happen to use guitars.
We wanted the quiet parts to feel as heavy as the loud parts. Space is an instrument — you just have to be brave enough to leave it empty.
